13. Japan & Russia

When giving gifts in another country, you should be aware that certain numbers have cultural significance. For example, in Japan bringing four of anything is considered bad luck. The word for four in Japan is “shi,” which has the same pronunciation as the word for death.
And while you probably don’t count the number of flowers in a bouquet in the United States, you should make sure to do so in Russia before bringing them as a gift. In Russia, flowers should only be given as a gift in odd numbers because an even numbered amount of flowers is considered proper only for funerals.
