Four million square miles and one billion people strong, you could spend a lifetime exploring China and still not see all the riches that this ancient nation has to offer. If you have the chance to be in the country for a few days or a few weeks, here are ways to see the sights you wouldn’t see at resorts or on tour guides.

1. Take In A Prayer Ceremony

Though China’s a communist nation where the state declares atheistic policies, there’s plenty of religious and cultural influence in everyday life. Visit a Buddhist temple and you’ll find monks burning incense or go to a Tao monastery where priests write holy caligraphy upon the steps of their building.
