5. Go Upriver

A train’s the faster way to get around in China, but a boat on one of the many river systems is far more enjoyable. You get to see how rivers function as the lifeblood of Chinese culture, with fishermen rising at dawn to set traps and hand-powered boats carrying goods up and down the river. You may even see animals like musk deer, camels, or golden pheasant coming to the river’s edge for a drink.
