9. Drive and then drive some more to Big Bend

Desolate as a moonscape with deep, black nighttime skies and rugged flattop mountains, Big Bend National Park requires a lengthy road trip through Texas just to get to the park. Looking up at the night sky in Big Bend makes civilization and light pollution feel like a distant memory. The park’s geology is so incredible that NASA astronauts came to the park in the 1960s to get a feel for what the rocks might look like on the moon.
