Lovely Sanibel Island is famous for being one of the best shelling beaches in the world. Unlike most islands, which lie north to south, Sanibel is unique in that it runs from east to west. Because of this unusual geography, large quantities of beautiful shells continuously wash up on to Sanibel’s shores from the Gulf of Mexico.
