12. See The Silk Road

It’s not surrounded by tourist kiosks, it’s not in the midst of hotels and restaurants, and you may struggle to find it in some basic guidebooks. But the Silk Road running through the western part of the country is one of the most important parts of Chinese history, connecting the nation to the world. Silks, spices, jade, gold, perfume, and all matter of luxury items traveled thousands of miles on this road to Asia and Europe.
